“Sit down!” “Be still” “Quiet!”
I’ve said it a hundred times… But how do I really train them? As I have often cried out to the Lord for wisdom and answers to that very question, He has shown me something I can do to help my children, minutes at a time.
We started with 2 minutes. We chose a place for them to sit. I told them to sit still, without talking or moving (realistically… A little wiggling and itching your nose is acceptable😉). We set the timer for 2 minutes and said, “GO!” After the 2 minutes was up, they got a piece of gum, lots of hugs and cheers, and a hearty, “Good job!” Next time, we’ll go for 5 minutes and work up to 30 or more! My older guys were recalling a particular training session for them years back, and one certain boy was having trouble giggling… We kept having to start the time over. They recall that session taking “FOREVER!” But they all admit that it was time well spent and helpful, even though at the time they didn’t like it.
“For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”
